Live happily ever after

Storybook endingJoshua 21:44, 45
And the LORD gave them rest on every side, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers, and no one of all their enemies stood before them; the LORD gave all their enemies into their hand. Not one of the good promises which the LORD had made to the house of Israel failed; all came to pass.

This sounds like the OT version of “and they all lived happily ever after” – no more problems, no more enemies, all was well with everyone. Of course, we know that isn’t what happened. They did not all live happily ever after.

In fact, as soon as Joshua and his generation died the people began to chase other gods, false idols and demonic worship (Judges 2:10). That led to the dark time of the Judges when “every man did what was right in his own eyes” and led to Israel being in bondage to those around them.

All went well while Joshua lived. There was victory, peace, closeness with the Lord. All was bliss until Joshua died. Oh, if Joshua could have lived forever. Great news … our Joshua does live forever!

Joshua is a picture of Jesus in the OT. (In fact, Jesus is the Greek form of the name Joshua.) Our Joshua has died but rose again and lives forever! The peace and joy He has promised will be ours forever. In this world we will have struggles, trials, tribulations but we can rejoice, be of good cheer, because our Joshua has overcome the world and all our enemies. … and HE lives and rules and reigns forever!

Hebrews 7:24-25
… because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
Luke 1:33
… and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”
